Newsweek just released their 2008 Top 1,300 Public High School Rankings:
“The NEWSWEEK list of top U.S. high schools was compiled this year, as in years past, according to a single metric, the proportion of students taking college-level exams: Cambridge, International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement. We count the total number of these tests taken at a school by all students each May, and divide by the number of graduating seniors. Any school with a ratio of 1.000 or higher is placed on the NEWSWEEK list.”
Highlights from the list for Northern Virginia include:

#55: Langley, McLean
#59: George Mason, Falls Church
#65: Washington-Lee, Arlington
#74: W.T. Woodson, Fairfax
#75: Yorktown, Arlington
#99: McLean, McLean
#105: Oakton, Vienna
#144: Herndon, Herndon
#151: James Madison, Vienna
#218: Robinson Secondary, Fairfax

Vienna, VA education options include 16 public schools in the Fairfax County Public School system, and 10 private schools. Vienna was ranked 4th in CNN Money’stop 100 places to live in the U.S. Fairfax County Public Schools are ranked among the best in the U.S., it’s also ranked 13th largest in the nation. Vienna’s two main public high schools are Oakton and Madison High School. Oakton was ranked 99th Best High School in the U.S. in 2007 by Newsweek. Madison was ranked 123rd in the same poll. McLean, VA public schools are part of the Fairfax County Public School system. There are 8 public schools in McLean and 10 private. The main high schools are McLean and Langley High Schools. McLean was ranked 73rd in Newsweek’s 2007 Top High Schools in the US poll. Langley has the highest average SAT scores of all of the Fairfax County high schools. Former graduates of Langley include Gilmore Girls actress Lauren Graham, and Glamour Magazine Editor-in-Chief Cynthia Leive.

Reston, Virginia is served by 10 public and 6 private schools. The primary high school in Reston, South Lakes High School, is the former high school of NBA Star Grant Hill (Phoenix Suns). Residents of Reston are served by the Fairfax County Public School system. Fairfax County Schools comprise the 13th largest school district in the U.S.

Falls Church, VA is served by the Falls Church City Public School (FCCPS) District. One of Falls Church’s public schools, George Mason High School, was ranked #1 in the DC Area by the Washington Post and #6 in the nation by Newsweek. In 2006, 95.4% of graduates were seeking post-secondary education. While FCCPS is served by 4 schools, there are other schools located in the city of Falls Church served by Fairfax County Schools.

Arlington, VA public high schools were rated in the top 1% in the U.S. in 2007 by the Newsweek
Washington Post Challenge Index. Facts indicate Arlington has a 92.1% graduation rate. In 2006 Arlington was ranked the most educated city (percentage of residents with graduate degrees) by CNN Money. A testament to the high ratings Arlington receives is a former graduate of Yorktown High School, current CBS evening news anchor, Katie Couric.
